Autism Awareness Day
Every April, people around the world join together to raise awareness as well as increase understanding of people with autism.
Magrath Elementary School will be recognizing this day on Monday, April 3 and students are invited to wear a BLUE shirt.
Autism Awareness Day is a day to recognize all those individuals around the world who live on the autism spectrum. Here in Canada, 1 in 66 children are currently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); globally, more than 70 million people live with autism. Our school will be wearing blue on April 1 in support of understanding and acceptance for people with autism. (Actual day is April 2).
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention, and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Each individual with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music, and academic skills. (austimspeaks.org School Community Tool Kit)
